Chapter Five

THE APOSTOLIC DIMENSION OF TRINITARIAN LIFE
64. Deeply committed to the Church and its mystery, the Brothers of the Trinitarian Order will share fully in that redemptive mission which the Lord Jesus received from his Father through the Holy Spirit, as it is stated in the Gospel: “The spirit of the Lord is upon me; therefore, he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind and release to prisoners” (Lk 4, 18).
Thus, with the Holy as its dynamic principle and ultimate motivation, the Order’s apostolate is to serve the universal and local Church through endeavors of charity and through the sacred ministry, which are to be performed according to the Order’s specific charism.
Love and redemption give life and form to the whole apostolate of the Order; through these the Brothers share in and bear witness to the love of the Holy Trinity in the work of humankind’s salvation.
65. And so, let our Order share in the Church’s mission and its pastoral endeavor to build up the Kingdom of God by ministering to the faith and through a service of love and redemption, whether these activities be carried out among Christians or in ecumenical field or in the missions[32].
66. In performing activities connected with the apostolate, the Brothers are also subject to the authority of the bishop “whom they are obliged to honor with unremitting respect and reverence”[33].
Mass media should be employed in carrying out the apostolate according to their suitability and in precise compliance with all prescriptions of universal law.
According to canon 832, all our religious need also the permission of their Major Superior in order to be able to publish writing with questions of religion or morals. But let the Major Superior not grant it unless at least one religious – an expert on subject who discharges the duty of censor – has given in writing a favorable opinion.
In undertaking apostolic endeavors, let bishops and superiors proceed after consulting with each other[34].
The apostolate of charity and redemption
67. Adhering to the Founder’s intention and attentive to the needs of the Church, the Brothers are bound to carry out an apostolate of mercy and redemption on behalf of those whose faith is in danger. They will direct this work also to those who are burdened by the yoke of some form of modern slavery[35].
The Brothers are obliged to promote these works of charity and redemption through their own diligent and creative labor and by eliciting the cooperation of other members of the Trinitarian Family, of benefactors and other men and women of good will.
In the context of persecution for Christ or those whose Christian faith is endangered or impeded, the Order will promote this redemptive charity through the Office of the Procurator General of the Redemption, which, following the tradition of the Order, promotes information and awareness, prayer for the persecuted and concrete projects.
68. Moreover, in keeping with the spirit of the Order’s Rule and tradition in regard to the division of material goods, the Brothers will set aside from their income what is necessary for their own moderate sustenance and will employ the balance for performing works of mercy and redemption, especially on behalf of those who are suffering because of their faith[36].
69. Since the field of the apostolate of charity and redemption is very vast, the general chapter will examine the signs of the times and, according to the more pressing needs of the Church and in conformity with the spirit of the Order, will determine the preferential activities to be chosen and carried out by our religious.
70. Should the seriousness of a situation demand it, it is the task of the same chapter or congregation to determine also the manner according to which the houses and the provinces are to contribute assistance.
It pertains to the individual provinces to define how this type of apostolate is to be carried out, taking into consideration local circumstances and the norms of local church.
In the various communities of the Order it will be the task of the conventual chapter, with the approval of the competent authority, to take upon itself the responsibility of programming and directing the apostolic work of charity and of adapting it to the circumstances of place and time.
The missionary apostolate
71. “Since the whole Church is missionary, and the work of evangelization is a basic duty of the People of God”[37], our Order, too, is directly involved in carrying out this task in missionary lands. This work is within the scope of the spirit of the Order and belongs to its tradition and patrimony[38].
As a matter of fact, in the missions, the Order advances the redemption of the human race, carries out its specific works of charity and apostolate, and raises up new sanctuaries and temples for the Holy Trinity through baptism.
The pastoral ministry
72. Our Order is open to the many forms of apostolate and the various endeavors that are connected with the pastoral responsibility of the church.
The Brothers “should devote themselves with full awareness and zeal to work” in the local Churches and to undertake the pastoral ministry with a generous spirit, according to the needs of the place and of the People of God; this they should do in such a way “that they affect and evince in the diocese the specific witness and genuine mission of their Order” and that “they faithfully safeguard their essential participation in the life of their community”[39].
The prescriptions of the Church and of the Order are to be observed in accepting, administering and relinquishing parishes, chaplaincies and other activities or responsibilities of this nature[40].
The Holy Trinity in the apostolate of the Order
73. By word and deed, the Trinitarian Brothers will work constantly to promote the worship of and the devotion to the Most Holy Trinity. Using contemporary methods, they will strive to achieve these goals, so that every person may know and love the One-and-Triune God, especially in his relationship with humankind and in his relationship with those facts and events which testify to and manifest his life-giving presence in human hearts and in the world.
74. In the apostolate, whether the activity is specific to the Order or common within the Church, our religious will assist the faithful in developing a solid and dynamic faith that considers all things in the light of the mystery of the Holy Trinity, a faith that provides some understanding and comfort to justice and love, especially for the disadvantaged[41].
The Brothers should especially help the members of the Trinitarian associations to nurture a special devotion to the Holy Trinity and to participate in the Order’s apostolic work.
